| Surnames as we know them today were first introduced from the 11th to
the 15th century. They were not in use in England and Scotland before
the Norman Conquest and were first found in the Domesday Book. A
surname, also known as a last name or family name, is a fixed name
shared in common with the members of a family and is passed down from
generation to generation.
The employment of a second name, a custom that was introduced by the Normans, who themselves had not long before adopted them, became in the course of time a mark of gentle blood, and it was a disgrace for a gentleman to have but one single name, as the meaner sort had. It was not until the reign of Edward II (1307 - 1327) that the practise became general among all people.
Surname spelling has evolved over centuries and until the 20th century, the spelling of a surname was not fixed. Before then, it was not unusual to see the same person's surname spelled in different ways from record to record e.g. “Saddler” an occupational name derived from the Old English Sadol, a maker of saddles. The name is also spelt “Sadler” and “Sadtler”.
Here's some of the interesting facts you'll find about your family name: For example, did you know that the surname Smith was an occupational name for “a Smith” a worker in metals, one who worked on a lathe, a blacksmith or farrier; and the surname “Roberts” was a baptismal name “the son of Rodbert” meaning fame-bright originally derived from the Germanic personal name composed of the elements of HROD and BERHT.
The top surnames in the UK are changing almost as fast as the most popular first names. The movements of people from around the commonwealth and more recently from Europe radically affect the popularity of family names in use in England. Here is a list of the top 10 Surnames – Smith, Jones, Williams, Brown, Taylor, Davies, Wilson, Evans, Thomas, Roberts.
